OPI Big Apple Red is one of our most popular reds; it’s right up there next to OPI Red, and commonly compared to other reds that OPI releases.

Shown in 2 coats, it’s a vibrant, red cream. It’s your classic power red and I specifically like wearing it on my toes. It goes with everything, always looks pretty and the formula is also quite nice.

It goes on easily, in thin coats and dries quickly.

Of all the reds that I have in my collection and have tried so far, it’s still one of my favorites. I search for it in my drawers when looking for an easy, trusty manicure or pedicure.

Personally, I think it’s nice to have a few colors in the same range of shades you like for versatility. Having several different reds to choose from helps you notice the fine nuances in each shade, which I think contributes to the level of appreciation you have for the colors themselves.

Now for the comparison shades…

OPI Red Hot Rio swatch

OPI Red Hot Rio

Red Hot Rio can be a 1 coat wonder. This is how it’s shown here, where it creates a jelly effect. When worn in 2 coats, it’s a near exact match to Big Apple Red - you would likely not be able to tell the difference.

The main difference between them is the formula. Red Hot Rio can be worn as a sheer red, as it’s even on the 1st coat. Big Apple Red really does need the full 2 coats to do it justice.

OPI Red Heads Ahead

Red Heads Ahead is a bright red cream, yet it’s a slightly deeper red than Big Apple Red.

We first featured it in a post on Christmas Nails and I tend to reach for it only during fall and winter, whereas Big Apple Red, though popular in the winter, is more of a year-round red in my eyes.

OPI Thrill of Brazil swatch

OPI Thrill of Brazil

Thrill of Brazil is a slightly juicier, bluer red and when worn in 2 coats, it is a touch sheerer than Big Apple Red. You’ll still see the nail line with longer natural nails wearing this shade.

Kokie Rendezvous swatch

Kokie Rendezvous

Shown in 2 coats, Rendezvous is another near exact match to Big Apple Red. The main differences between these two shades are the price and formula; Kokie polishes tend to be more affordable and made with more eco-friendly ingredients.

This is a great shade to branch into especially if you are looking for a budget-conscious alternative.
