Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, February 13, 2024.
It’s French for “Fat Tuesday” and a celebration for eating all the rich, fatty foods you like before the Lenten season begins, which starts Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
Before Lent begins and we do our best to clean up our pantries and our lives, Mardi Gras colors entice us with a burst of royalty, lushness and luxury.
The colors of Mardi Gras date back to 1872, with the first Rex parade. It was then that the King of the Carnival declared the balconies should be decked out in gold, green and purple - colors fit for kings and queens.
In 1892, these colors were cemented during the Symbolism of Colors parade.
Gold represents power, green represents faith and purple represents justice.
