Finding a perfect red can be a fun, creative hunt.
There’s so many to choose from and so many nuances in the red family of colors that the search for the best red varnish for you right now can certainly quench any primitive hunter-gatherer urges you may have.
Red nail polish can be neutral in tone, it can also lean pink, orange or blue. It can be bright and vibrant, it can also be dark and dramatic. It can even be somewhat sheer.
Every brand makes a variety of reds, though today we are going to compare and contrast two bright vibrant colors in the red family from the brand OPI: Big Apple Red and Cajun Shrimp.
In the swatches below, you will find both of these popular colors shown in two coats with a top coat, in the same formula, with our take on the differences and similarities.
Let’s start with the classic, Big Apple Red:
Big Apple Red
It’s not too warm or too cool, it’s not too blue or too orange, it’s just right and it is bright, you could call it a hot red, though not a neon. You can wear this shade in any season. Given how vibrant it is, it can be an accessory to any outfit on its own.
Now onto Cajun Shrimp, the summer favorite:
Cajun Shrimp
It’s a perfect summer red, hovering more on the pink-orange side of red, making it technically a coral red. It’s both pinker and more orange than Big Apple Red, and a little sheerer. You could call this a medium coverage nail polish with beachy-red hot summer day feels.
Now let’s look at them side-by-side:
In general the biggest difference between Big Apple Red and Cajun Shrimp is in the tone of red.
Big Apple Red is a classic bright neutral red where Cajun Shrimp is a coral, a bright red with pink-orange undertones.
Cajun Shrimp is also a bit more sheer than Big Apple Red, though in two coats, Big Apple Red may still show the white tips of your nails, if you have them, in some lighting.
They are both bright, hot reds, yet one is more classic red and the other more pink orange. In our view they are both beautiful, so choosing really depends on your mood, your needs and what you are looking for today.
