essie gel couture rock the runway is one of essie’s top selling red nail polishes, and it’s one of our readers’ favorite reds.
It’s a vibrant scarlet red that offers even coverage in 2 coats and it’s long wearing. You can wear it for up to 14 days without chips, though I typically wear it for about a week.
rock the runway is part of essie’s long wearing line, gel couture.
In the gel couture system, no base coat is needed, which I love, as the absence of the base coat lowers your manicure routine costs.
As this is such a popular shade, due to the gorgeous color and the long wearing results, it’s often weighed against other popular reds in the mainstream market.
So today, you’ll see a comparison of essie gel couture rock the runway to OPI’s Big Apple Red and another essie gel couture red, bubbles only.
Below, you’ll see swatches of rock the runway, followed by a comparison to each.
All of these creme formulas are shown in 2 coats.
Let’s start with essie gel couture rock the runway:
rock the runway is a fierce, vibrant, bold classic red with warm undertones.
I love it because I believe it makes the hand look younger, due to its sun-kissed, scarlet tomato red appearance. It adds a kiss of vitality to the hand.
essie gel couture rock the runway VS OPI Big Apple Red
Compared to essie gel couture rock the runway, OPI Big Apple Red is a bit darker with more blue undertones, whereas rock the runway is a bit brighter with more orange undertones.
OPI Big Apple Red is also available in a variety of formula types (i.e. lacquer, long wearing lacquer, gel, dip), whereas rock the runway is only available as a long wearing lacquer.
Additionally, with Big Apple Red, whichever formula you choose, it will require an additional base coat to get the best adhesion. rock the runway does not require that extra step in the gel couture long wearing system.
Overall, Big Apple Red is darker with more blue tones, formula variety and coats needed.

essie gel couture rock the runway VS bubbles only
bubbles only is a classic burgundy, also in essie’s long wearing formula, gel couture.
If dark red nail colors chip on you and it’s a barrier to wearing them, I can confidently say that I’ve worn this shade for an entire work week. It will show tip wear but remains 100% chip free with proper nail prep.
Compared to rock the runway, it differs in that it’s much darker in color and in the burgundy red category of colors, rather than in the “classic red” category.
Overall, bubbles only is a much darker red and it’s one of my personal favorite burgundies on the market today.
Now let’s consider the red tone…
All in all, essie gel couture rock the runway is a classic, vibrant red creme. It’s the only shade of these that you could classify as a “summer red.”
As for me, rock the runway is one of the nail colors I reach for on the weekends when I’m not doing swatches, because it’s a durable, sturdy red you can rely on.
