essie was founded in 1981 and many nail trends have come and gone since then. Today, there are just 3 polishes still on the market from that original launch collection.

These original essie nail colors are blanc, licorice and bordeaux, which is the last standing red; a deep, red wine.

bordeaux has stood the test of time.

While it remains one of the most well known and iconic essie reds, as I write this, there are other red nail polishes that have been taking the spotlight at the top of essie’s best sellers list recently.

I love following a brand’s best seller lists because it really gives you a good idea of the current nail trends and how the trends have evolved over time.

The reds in this post have been lingering for years on the essie best selling list, while other shades in the blue and green categories have dropped on and off. They’re stickier, longer term popular shades.

Below we’ll highlight 5 of the reds gracing essie’s current best selling colors list.

Without further ado, the most popular essie red nail polishes:

essie gel couture rock the runway

Shown in 2 coats, rock the runway is long-wearing fire red from the 2016 fashion show collection, also known as the gel couture launch collection.

You could call it a poppy red or scarlet red. Whatever you call it, it’s the brightest and most eye-catching red in this bunch. I get 5-7 days wear time out of this shade, which is good for me.

essie forever yummy

Shown in 2 coats, forever yummy is the best-named essie red. It was first released in 2008, under the name “forever young,” which is also an appealing name for it.

It’s from the original enamel essie line, as opposed to expressie (quick dry) or gel couture (long wear), which has a wear time of around 3-5 days - just enough time to enjoy the color.

I like this color because it has a rich, creamy elegant formula, it self-levels and glides over the nail as you apply it.

Shown in 2 coats, seize the minute is a dark brick red creme. It’s from the 2019 essie expressie launch collection

You could easily call it a maroon nail polish. Though it does have blue undertones, it pulls very warm on my skin.

This is a quick dry formula, you can put it on when you need a fast, yet classic red manicure. It’s designed as a “grab and go” one bottle manicure formula and doesn’t require a base or top coat, but adding both will increase your wear time.

Shown in 2 coats, bubbles only is my favorite burgundy from essie and it’s also from the 2016 gel couture launch collection. As a gel couture color, it’s a long-wearing shade that gives me 5-7 days of wear time.

Finally, let’s end it on the most fun red in the bunch…

essie watermelon

Shown in 2 coats and from the original line, watermelon is a juicy red with pink undertones. You could also call it a dark, warm pink that leans red. It reminds me of summer.

This is one of essie’s early shades, with an estimated release date between 1985 - 1987. Yet it’s still in demand, like bordeaux.
